Stunningly peaceful moments at the summit of Orrest Head, admiring breathtaking views of the Lake District had wiped any earlier irritation I may have had at Audrey for waking at such an early hour. Barring one photographer, we had it to ourselves, definitely making our early rise worthwhile.
In a sweet reverie Audrey and I strolled back down into Windermere. I was looking forward to my reward, breakfast at Just Good Food. Our happy mood was broken though, when we arrived to a ‘closed’ sign on the door. Boy, was I disappointed. A quick check on Facebook and lo and behold, a post saying they were, in fact, not opening today. Just Good Food had been on my radar since first discovering it whilst researching this trip. It seemed like my ideal place – healthy yet comforting food, relaxed vibe, dog friendly, steps away from Fisherty Howe etc. All good in theory, but could it make up for my disappointment on this Saturday morning? Read on to find out……
Audrey and I (finally) visited Just Good Food for breakfast on our last morning in Windermere, in April 2018. I paid £5.95 for a sausage butty and a latte.

Just Good Food is very appropriately named. Owned and run by a local, the emphasis is very much on the food being local, perfectly fresh, in season and hand cooked right in front of you. They put their menu on facebook every day, with several hot and cold options for breakfast and lunch. They have a salad bar which looks fantastic too, although as I went so early it’s empty in my photos, sorry guys! All options are covered in terms of dietary preferences.
Dog and Solo Friendly Score
Audrey and I were welcomed inside with open arms, dogs (and their owners) can sit anywhere they like. I didn’t spot a dog bowl, but equally I didn’t ask. The slate tiles on the floor are very dog friendly, and I would feel comfortable walking in with muddy boots or wet gear etc.
There were two members of staff (I think one was the owner) who were both lovely and very chatty. Plenty of books/magazines etc are dotted about the cafe, perfect for when you are by yourself. The first book I picked up was fantastic, a really great guide to The Lakes that engaged me for the length of my meal. It was a shame we were just about to drive back home! That guide would have been so useful at the start of our trip.
Food and Drink
I had a sausage bap, very reasonably priced at £3.75. Even more so when it came piled high with quality sausages. Audreys eyes lit up! My coffee was delicious, they clearly put a lot of effort and consideration into their coffee and at £2, it’s really good value. Looking at reviews, their salad wraps and hot meals are popular amongst locals and visitors alike.
Final Thoughts on Just Good Food
Friendly staff, fresh food, chilled vibe, great coffee, locally owned etc what’s not to love? When I’m in the Lake District, I will go out of my way to come back here and I have total faith it will be as good again. Highly recommended.
